Barunah Plains, west of Geelong, was once the largest sheep station in Victoria and still operates today. Its mansion, outbuildings and refurbished shearers' quarters are there to be enjoyed by visitors.

The house and "old world" garden at The Heights Heritage House & Garden date back to the 1850s - home to three generations of the one Geelong family. The house was erected in 1855 for Charles Ibbotson, who was a partner of Frederick Dalgety. The house is unique in that it is the largest (14 rooms) German pre-fabricated timber dwelling in Victoria.

Back in 1851 about 81 hectares of land was set aside for the Geelong Botanical Gardens. But with the harsh dry summer conditions it became impractical to develop a huge area of the reserve into our Botanical Gardens.
Over time an area of around 2 hectares was developed and later grew to around double that.

Victoria's west coast is steeped in maritime history, and none less than the shores of Corio Bay and the Bellarine Peninsula. Stately tall-masted clippers, belching steam-packets and disstrous shipwrecks were the flavour of the era and, even today, the Port of Geelong is among the busiest in the country.

The Geelong Historical Records Centre is Victoria's largest regional archive and resource centre.

The Centre was established in 1979 through a partnership between Geelong local government and the Geelong Historical Society. Operational funding is provided through municipal grants and self generated revenue and this is sufficient to employ professional staff to run the Centre. Volunteers assist the paid staff and perform much of the routine background work in archive, photograph and map cataloguing.

Within the same complex is Surfworld Museum which is a celebration of Australia's surfing and beach culture, incorporating related dress and musical fashions.

The museum focuses on the hazards to shipping of “The Rip” at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. There is hyrographic model showing the infamous “Rip Deep”. Lifeboats were stationed at Queenscliff near “The Rip” for 120 years from 1856. On display is the beautifully restored RNLI Watson Class lifeboat on call for 50 years until the service ceased in 1976.

Other features include navigation aids and safety gear, maritime paintings and the history of Port Phillip Sea Pilots. At Weeroona Parade, Queenscliff Open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

The Geelong Art Gallery is considered one of the state's finest provincial galleries.

The gallery was established in 1896 and the current building dates back to 1913. The land was donated by the City Council and building was financed by public subscriptions and a government grant. There have been many expansions to the building with major changes in years, 1937, 1958 and 1970.

The collection of late 19th and early 20th century paintings by British artists and members of the Royal Academy reflect the prevailing taste of the time
