More adventurous and active visitors will find another world high above the Gardens.

Just behind the Gardens is the Mt Whitfield Conservation Park - over 300 hectares of forested mountain range. Reaching an elevation of 365 metres above sea level, the Park offers many opportunities for nature-based recreation and educational activities along its two major walking tracks - the Red and Blue Arrow circuits.

The vegetation is rainforest with patches of eucalyptus and grasslands. There is only limited recruitment of plants and animals and this makes the Park a very valuable and delicate resource.

93km north east of Cooktown lie the magnificent Lizard Island group declared a national park in 1939 with the surrounding islands given the same status in 1987. Lizard Island itself rises some 359m above sea level. The islands and surrounding waters are all part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. They are both protected areas.

A true coral cay visited daily from Cairns, Green Island is more than a tropical island surrounded by magnificent coral reef. There's white sandy beaches, safe swimming year round, self-guided snorkelling trails, glass-bottom boats, the Underwater Observatory (where you can see a wide variety of fish) and Marineland Melanesia.

Only 45 minutes by boat from Cairns lies 339ha of tropical island national park. Originally named by Captain Cook in 1770 the park is part of the coastal granite chain of mountains along the far north coast. The park is popular with day-trippers from Cairns trying their hand at snorkelling on the reefs, scuba diving, sea kayaking, fishing, and bushwalking.
