Mugga-Mugga is Canberra's best kept secret.

It is a testament to the lives of the families who worked on the Limestone Plain's great pastoral estates. Set on seventeen hectares of grazing land its centrepiece is a simple cottage built for the head shepherd of Duntroon in the 1830s. This simple dwelling has been adapted and extended over time. The small stone cottage has been conserved and furnished with household items that belonged to the Curley family who moved to Mugga-Mugga from Duntroon in 1913.

Lanyon is one of Australia's most historic grazing properties. The homestead dates from the 1850s and has been beautifully restored and furnished. It is set within superb pleasure gardens. The land was occupied by Aborigines for millennia and by European pastoralists for over 160 years. Sheep, cattle and horses still graze on the timbered hills and fertile banks of the Murrumbidgee river.

Proof that history isn't any less fascinating for being comparatively recent, Calthorpes' House is a time capsule from the first days of the national capital, the 1920s.

Situated among the elegant homes and embassies on Canberra's Mugga Way, it is perfectly preserved down to the clothes in the wardrobes and the household bills in the pantry. You can even inspect the air raid shelter!

In the early 1850s, traces of gold were discovered in the Canberra/Queanbeyan area.

These were the days of bushrangers. John Tennant, Jacky Jacky, Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall were names to be feared, as they roamed the country, relieving those who had struck it rich of their new-found wealth.

Bywong Town Gold Mining Village, 28 kilometres north of Canberra, recreates something of those early days. Here you can see an active gold mine with working machinery - and even try your hand at panning for gold - in a bushland setting.

The Campbells of Duntroon were one of the area's earliest land-holding families, and were responsible for a number of historic buildings you can visit today.

Their family residence is now part of the Royal Military College, while St John the Baptist Church, largely financed by the Campbells, is still in use.

You'll find the Nolan Gallery in the grounds of historic Lanyon Homestead on the Murrumbidgee River, 30km south of Canberra.

It houses a collection of paintings by Sir Sidney Nolan from the 1940s and 1950s including some of his famous Ned Kelly images and works on other Australian themes. Some of the paintings are on loan to other galleries from time to time, but there will always be some of Nolan's work on display. There is also a regular changing program of 20th century Australian art, including contemporary work.
