Situated near the head of Spencer Gulf in the environment that is best described as the outback meeting the sea, the Whyalla Maritime Museum is a home to the first modern warship ever built in South Australia.
The Whyalla's BHP shipyards constructed four World War Two corvettes in 1941 and 1942. They distinguished themselves in the South West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. HMAS Whyalla became the first ship to be built in Whyalla, today permanently landlocked 2 km from the sea. The museum collection represents the story of the WWII corvettes, BHP shipbuilding, natural history and maritime heritage of the upper Spencer Gulf.
