The only Wet Tropical Botanic Gardens in Australia. Botanic Gardens around the world function to provide recreation, education and conservation of world flora.
Many tropical countries however are underdeveloped and resource-poor which places Flecker Botanic Gardens in an important position on a national and global scale in representing flora of the Wet Tropics and Equatorial regions.
The Flecker Botanic Gardens began in 1886 as a 'Recreational Reserve'. Around 1888 Mr Eugene Fitzalan, a botanical collector, moved to Cairns from Bowen and arranged with the Cairns City Council to establish a small nursery near the present gardens site.
