The Newcastle Region Art Gallery offers people an enriching and rewarding experience. Through its diverse public programs and changing exhibitions the Gallery plays a key role in stimulating cultural life in the Hunter region.
The Gallery's collection art rivals other public collections in Australia with its quality and breadth. Some 3000 works of art present an encyclopedic view of Australian art from colonial times. Paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints and sculpture are included in the extensive range of media. Major artists are represented: such as John Glover, Arthur Streeton, Margaret Preston, Grace Cossington-Smith William Dobell, Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, Brett Whiteley and Rosalie Gascoigne. The Gallery's 20th century Australian and Japanese ceramics are among the finest in the country. As well, there is a significant collection of Aboriginal bark paintings from Arnhem Land, which were acquired in 1963.
